IIE 001 Quality Assurance Policy

The stated aim of the IIE’s quality assurance policy is to enhance the efficacy of its primary functions: learning and teaching as well as student management and staff development. The policy tackles all spheres of the IIE’s academic and administrative activities ensuring alignment with the IIE’s vision and mission statement.

IIE 002 Admissions Policy

The purpose of this policy is to prescribe the requirements for admission to the IIE's higher and further education learning programmes. This policy has to be revised for 2009 in line with national developments in the senior certificate process.

IIE 002.1 Admission of Non-South African Citizens

The purpose of this policy is to outline the requirements to be met by a non-South African citizen who wishes to study at a South African learning institution. The policy differentiates between the different types of admission criteria as well as the different types of permits required.

IIE 003 Equity and Redress Policy

This policy and the implied procedures are aimed at clarifying the purpose and processes for redress and enrolment for the divisional brands of The Independent Institute of Education (IIE). Redress implies a need to set right, remedy or rectify an inequity or injustice; it also points to the need to make amends for a wrong done, a correction needed and/or reparation required to make a fair adjustment and to see that justice is done.

IIE 004 Academic Credit Policy

The IIE supports and practices Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as well as the granting of credits as exemptions in the case of a student who has studied previously at a recognised learning institution. Therefore, if a candidate wishes to register for a learning programme and to be granted academic credit with respect to qualifications / unit standards/ subjects / modules passed elsewhere such a credit may be granted, subject to specific requirements being met.

IIE 005 Programme Development Policy

The IIE is committed to improvement, excellence, and transformation in higher education. Within this context, the key function of programme development is enrichment of our learning offerings as well as the students’ learning experience and the perpetuation of high academic standards in an environment that is defined by a diverse student population as well as the IIE’s varied academic offerings. The policy identifies and explains the IIE’s philosophy and guidelines around new programme development and continuous review and improvement of existing learning offerings.

IIE 006 Experiential Learning and Practical Training Policy

The purpose of this experiential learning policy is to outline the nature and purpose of experiential learning, as well as practical training and ways in which the policy can be implemented, whereby students put their academic knowledge into action through relevant work experience gained in trade, industry and/or the public sector or in simulated, practical activities. Specifically, this shall be addressed by means of work placements in relevant industries and effective classroom projects and recreations.

IIE 007 Research Policy

This policy outlines general principles to guide research activities and guarantee the standing of academic investigation within the divisional brands of the IIE. The diffusion of information and carrying out of research are essential and aligned functions of a teaching and learning strategy.

IIE 008 Library Policy

This policy outlines the general library aim to develop and improve resources and services in support of the instructional, research and programme needs of the following users namely students, staff and researchers.

IIE 009 Assessment Policy

The policy outlines the purpose of assessment in the teaching and learning context which is to monitor the student’s progress on an ongoing basis and to provide feedback on this progress in such a way that a student is empowered to improve his or her performance (formative assessment) and to provide valid and reliable information about student progress towards the achievement of learning outcomes (summative assessment).

IIE 010 Recognition of Prior Learning Policy

This RPL policy refers to the recognition of learning whether it takes place formally at an educational institution or happens informally in a non-traditional or non-formal way. Specifically, the Academic Credit Policy covers recognition of accredited formal learning. The IIE’s RPL Policy is aimed at meeting the requirements of Criterion 14 of the Council on Higher Education’s Criteria for Institutional Audits Learning occurs in all kinds of situations – formally and informally.

IIE 011 Student Records Policy

This policy outlines general principles to guide the safekeeping of student records. The policy also outlines the procedures for ensuring a full academic and administrative record of all students currently registered, graduated or non-returning is maintained at all sites.

IIE 012 Certification Policy

The purpose of the certification policy and procedures is to outline clear and effective arrangements to ensure that the integrity of the certification process is not compromised. This implies effective mechanisms to quality assure the processing and issuing of certificates and effective security measures to avoid fraud or illegal issuing of certificates.

IIE 013 Language Policy

South Africa is a multilingual country in which 11 languages are constitutionally protected. The unique history of our country, coupled with the international experience in multi-lingual countries, make it imperative that African languages should receive ongoing attention at schools and in other spheres of social and economic activity. However, as English is the language most commonly used in official and commercial life in South Africa and as it is a language associated with economic and social mobility English enables improved access to the country’s economic resources and increases the ability of the individual to participate meaningfully in the economy. English is thus the chosen medium of instruction at the IIE.

IIE 014 Student Support Policy

Education is more than an academic process. Students registered with the IIE will be provided with support services that will enable them to develop holistically and to make the most of their educational opportunity. In particular, recognizing that secondary schooling in South Africa has provided unequal opportunities for students such support services will include academic support and development and the promotion of a learning culture on campuses.

IIE 015 Student Code of Conduct

This policy reflects the core values of the Institute. It also sets out what the Institute expects from every student. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that enhances and extends the reputation and the orderly functioning of the Institute. Students are also expected to observe all rules and regulations concerning their conduct in letter and spirit.

IIE 016 Student Participation Policy

The White Paper (1997) on Transformation of Higher Education ‘encourages meaningful involvement of students and staff in all permanent governance structures of the institution’. Accordingly the IIE is invested in providing students with opportunities to participate in certain elements of decision-making as well as contributing to creating dynamic campuses that encourage learning and ongoing student involvement.

IIE 017 Short Learning Programmes

The IIE is committed to improvement, excellence and transformation in education. Within this context, the key function of Short Learning Programmes is the enrichment of learners. The policy defines short learning programmes and the procedures surrounding the offering and certification of short learning programmes.

IIE 018 - Staff Development Policy

ADvTECH is committed to the development of its employees and to this end, provides internal and external opportunities for personal development. This policy aims to regulate bursary grants to employees who wish to further their education through recognised learning institutions

IIE 021 Addictive Substances Policy

The possession, consumption, or transportation of alcoholic beverages on the Independent Institute of Education (IIE) premises/campuses or in Institute-owned facilities is generally prohibited as a matter of institutional policy. However, it may be permitted on special occasions such as awards ceremonies, receptions, periodic fund-raisers for campus programmes, student functions or as approved by the relevant divisional brand Managing Director.

All members of the campus community have a stake in ensuring that alcohol is used only in a responsible manner. This policy focuses on alcohol use in moderation by persons 18 years and over and addresses legal liabilities. Alcohol abuse, including binge drinking or drunk driving, will not be tolerated.

IIE 019 Community Engagement Policy

The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) defines community engagement as the process of working in partnership with groups of people associated by a sense of community in an attempt to enhance the well-being of the community while building a sense of citizenship for students and staff. It is a powerful vehicle for bringing about change and often involves partnerships and collaborations that help activate resources to serve as catalysts for change (Fawcett et al., 1995).

IIE 022 Teaching and Learning Strategy

This policy sets out The Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd (IIE)`s Teaching and Learning Strategy. It is designed to acknowledge how critically important teaching and learning are to the achievement of the IIE’s mission and the fulfilment of the institutional strategic plan. Significantly, the IIE seeks to promote and accomplish quality objectives as well as support capacity development.

IIE 020 Official Documentation Policy

The DoE by virtue of Regulations 24, 26 and 28 requires private higher education institutions to:

Display the following statement in full on all official documents:

“…. a trading division of the IIE is registered with the Department of Education as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997. Registration Certificate no. xxxxx”

Publish once a year a calendar , prospectus or brochure for the information of students and the public

Ensure that all information about their approved programmes and accreditation status is accurate and not to make any false, fraudulent or misleading statements in any of their official documents.

The main purpose of this policy is to prescribe a long-term procedure that will ensure compliance with Regulations 24, 26 and 28 cited in the preamble
